Valentine’s Day has never been a huge event in our lives. The most romantic  Valentine’s Day that I remember was when it fell on the annual get away ‘with the guys’ weekend for my husband . I came home from work to find an itty-bitty white teddy bear holding a red heart saying ‘I love you!’

I think we were cured of going out for dinner on Valentine’s after having booked a table, much in advance, at the Prince of Wales at Niagara-on-the-Lake.  It looked a little manufactured to us even then, and this was a long time before it became the tourist destination that it is now. Back in the day, it was a sleepy little town during the winter months.

Depending on the mood and the year, I will either make a special meal, or not. This year was one where something special seemed the right thing to do. So, with just a little planning, I did create a Valentine inspired meal, as it turned out, with options.

Appetizer

Blood Orange and Beet Carpaccio

or

Love Apple Soup

Main

Crispy Duck Breast with Cherry-Caper Sauce

or

 Spicy Pomegranate-Glazed Chicken

Dessert

Double Chocolate Chip Giant Sharing Cookie

We celebrated early, and over a couple of dinners to give me the opportunity to actually make these delicious recipes. Indecision on my part has turned into options for you. All the dishes are easy to prepare and require very few ingredients. So, if you are in the mood, set the table, light some candles and celebrate Valentine’s Day with the one you love!
